Styrkr Nutrition

I've tried plenty of sports nutrition brands over the years, some with mixed results. So when Styrkr started coming up in cycling conversations, I was intrigued but didn't want to get ahead of myself. A few months and many kilometres later, I'm happy to say it's been worth the switch.

Who Is Styrkr?

Styrkr (pronounced stir-kuh, meaning "strength" in Old Norse) is a UK-developed endurance nutrition brand that's been making waves in the cycling and endurance sports world. Their whole philosophy is built around science-backed formulations, specifically designed for athletes who need fuel that actually performs under pressure, not just on paper. Everything in their range is 100% vegan and non-GMO. And crucially, it's all pH-balanced and built around a dual-carbohydrate system (maltodextrin and fructose) at an optimal 1:0.8 ratio, designed to minimise gut discomfort while maximising energy absorption. For anyone who's bonked 40km from home, that matters a lot.

The Energy Gels

This is where Styrkr first caught my attention, and they didn't disappoint. The gels use a dual-carb formula that delivers fast energy without the spike-and-crash rollercoaster. On longer rides, I noticed I could sustain effort more consistently, no sudden drop-offs, no desperate reaching for the snack pocket every 20 minutes. The taste is genuinely good. The flavours are balanced, not overly sweet, and the texture goes down easy even when you're gasping on a long climb. The packaging is also worth mentioning, easy to open with one hand, which is a small detail that becomes a big deal when you're descending and trying not to crash.

The Drink Mix

I've been using the MIX60 hydration powder, and it's quietly become a staple of my ride prep. It mixes cleanly, no clumps, no gritty residue at the bottom of the bottle. The flavour is light and not aggressively sweet, which I prefer for longer sessions where overly sugary drinks start to feel nauseating. What I really like is the flexibility. I can dial up or down the concentration depending on the ride, a shorter, harder session versus a 4-hour endurance day calls for different fuelling, and the sachet format makes it easy to manage your carb intake precisely.

The Science Behind It

One thing that sets Styrkr apart is that they're transparent about why they've formulated things the way they have. The inclusion of L-glutamine to help reduce the build-up of blood ammonia during exercise (which contributes to fatigue) shows this isn't just a slick marketing operation, there's genuine thought behind the product development.  The dual-carb ratio of 1:0.8 is specifically chosen because research shows it causes the least gut discomfort compared to other common ratios. That kind of detail matters to athletes who've learned the hard way that mid-ride GI issues can end a race or ruin a big training day.

Any Downsides?

In the spirit of being fair, Styrkr isn't the cheapest option on the market. You're paying a premium, and if you're just doing casual weekend rides, you might not feel the difference enough to justify the cost. That said, for anyone training seriously or preparing for events, I genuinely think the investment is worth it. You get what you pay for, and what you pay for here is quality ingredients, smart formulation, and products that actually hold up when it counts.

If you're a cyclist looking to level up your fuelling strategy, give Styrkr a proper trial. Start with a welcome pack or a mixed box of gels, and see how your body responds. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
